SEO: Searching for a Needle in a Stack of Needles September 7, 2010

Content is king when it comes to being found on the Internet. Every website is jockeying for that number one position, but what is it that makes a website better than another? First you have to understand how Google or any other search engine ranks web pages.

There are two main criteria for search engine optimization: keywords and relevance. Google, the number one search engine on the planet, uses a series of crawlers that traverse the web in search of relevant content (among other things) to satisfy the keywords being searched.

A keyword is what the people are searching for. These can be a single word or a group of words that are entered into a search engine. This may be confusing but think of it this way, if I am selling shoes a key word I would want to investigate would obviously be "shoes". But people aren't always looking for "shoes" they might be looking for "athletic wear". Even though it is made up of two words, "athletic wear" is considered one keyword.

Once you have established your keywords you can position your site content based on the relevancy of those search terms. But be warned, simply posting an article called "shoes shoes shoes basketball shoes tennis shoes" will not improve your score it will actually lower it or get you kicked off Google altogether. These are known as black hat techniques and should never be used.

So to keep your ranking high, think relevancy. It's is the best way to improve your position, simply write content that makes sense and update it regularly. SEO is not a one time thing, it has to be constantly maintained so make it a habit to write as often as you can. This will ensure that you are being found and then we can move on to the next step.
